Environment/Safety health
Sony Electronics of Korea Corporation,
which has designated environmental activities
as one of the key priorities in its business management,
is striving for “Zero Environmental Impact”.
Medium-term environmental goal,
“Green Management 2025”
To attain the ultimate aim of “Zero Environmental Impact,”, SONY is currently implementing
the environmental plan, “Road to Zero”.
We have set targets and are striving toward them throughout our business activities
and the entire life cycles of our products from four perspectives related to the environment: climate change, resources, chemicals, and biodiversity.
Four perspectives of the Road to Zero
We have set targets for each of the four perspectives related to the environment in the Road to Zero.
-
Climate change
Zero CO2 emissions from productsWe are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change throughout the life cycles of our products, not only in our activities at our business sites.
-
Resources
Zero use of newly mined resourcesWe aim to minimize input resources and maximize the use of renewable resources in our business activities and the life cycles of our products.
-
Chemicals
Stringent management starting with raw materialsWe are working to minimize the risk of significant adverse impacts of the chemicals we use on human health and the global environment.
-
Biodiversity
Harmonious coexistence with natureTo ensure balance among all living things, we are committed to preserving biodiversity in our business activities and social contribution activities in the community.
“Life cycle” in the Road to Zero
In the Road to Zero, “life cycle” refers to the process from the planning of the product or service to recovery and recycling.
A goal has been set for each of the six stages of a product life cycle.
-
01. Product/Service Planning and Design
- Creating products inspired by the environment
- We have introduced environmentally conscious features in our products to reduce environmental impact, while utilizing the characteristics unique to each business area.
-
02. Operations
- Globally unified environmental targets
- We set globally unified targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste and minimize the environmental impact of our factories and offices.
-
03. Raw Materials & Components Procurement
- Establishing partnerships with suppliers
- We aim for zero environmental impact, even in terms of energy and water conservation, in addition to ensuring rigorous management of chemicals in cooperation with our suppliers.
-
06. Innovation
- Creating environmentally conscious technologies and services
- We strive to create sustainable business models by developing environmental technologies and partnering with local communities.
-
05. Take back & Recycling
- Environmental activities even in consideration of post-cunsumer use
- Focusing on making products easy to recycle and building recycling systems, we proceed with take back, recycling, and back to re-use resources of post-used products.
-
04. Logistics
- Environmental Consideration through Study of Shipping system
- We are reducing CO2 emissions by minimizing packaging materials, improving loading efficiency, and switching to less environmental impact shipping system such as the railway.
RE100
Accelerating the switch to 100% renewable energy by joining RE100
RE100 is an international initiative operated by Environmental NPO's The Climate Group※1 in partnership with CDP※2 to prevent global warming.
Member companies are required to source 100% of the electricity they use for business activities from renewable energy sources by 2050 at the latest.
SONY joined RE100 in September 2018 to accelerate its progress on the Road to Zero.
With the aim of sourcing 100% of the electricity used in the SONY Group’s operations worldwide from renewable energy sources,
we are working to curb climate change, alongside the member companies around the world.
It has a strong network of businesses and administrative agencies that are leading the global markets and policies, through which it is capable of implementing measures against climate change more effectively.
※2 An international non-profit organization (NPO) that leads businesses and administrative agencies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting water resources and forests.
Backed by investors with a combined USD 87 trillion in assets, it operates an environmental disclosure system used by countless companies and municipalities and provides access to data analyses and expert opinions globally.
Sony Electronics of Korea’s Mission : Three Approaches to Achieving 100% Renewable Energy
Sony Electronics of Korea Corporation is taking the following approaches to the procurement and expanded use of renewable energy at SONY.
First, we are purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) through K-RE100 and issues Renewable Energy Use Certificate to contribute to SONY’s achievement of RE100.
Second, we are introducing solar power generation facilities.
SONY is actively introducing solar panels at various business sites across
the world and is also raising the share of renewable energy through self-generation at the semiconductor plants in Japan.
In 2019, Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation Kumamoto Technology Center installed 5,760 solar panels
and began operating a large-scale power generation Equipment with a projected annual output of 1.24 million kWh.
In line with these efforts, Sony Electronics of Korea Corporation is also introducing solar power generation facilities.
